Every year, thousands of athletes around the world get to test their fitness abilities by signing up for “The Open.” So, what is it?

The Open is the first step in getting to the Reebok CrossFit Games. And for some, that’s the goal. Some people train all year-long to see their names at the top of the leaderboard. And when it’s all said and done, they want to be named “The Fittest On Earth.”
But for others, it means gathering at your box on Thursday nights, and crowding around the big screen to hear the crazy Dave Castro announce the next deadly workout that’s more than likely going to kill us all. It means cheering on other members until they get that one last rep, or that ring muscle up that they could never get. It means bloody hands, and dripping sweat. Re-do’s so that we can improve our scores, and excitement when we are happy with the first time. Some of us aren’t trying to be the Fittest On Earth. Some of us do The Open because we have personal goals that we want to reach, and we like the challenges and comradery that it brings.
I was scrolling on Facebook the other day and I came across a few videos that people had shared of other athletes performing some of the Open workouts. Do you know what all those videos had in common? All of the people in them had a disability or missing limbs.. And I even saw one where the girl was blind. BLIND, y’all…. And every single one of those videos made me stop and think, what is my excuse??? Do I really have a legit excuse as to why I can’t make an attempt, or try harder? No, I don’t. And you don’t either. I hear so many people complain about all the reasons why they can’t do something, more than the reasons as to why they can. And after watching those videos, you best believe the next time I feel like giving up during a workout, that I’m going to remember how blessed I am to be able to have a body that allows me to do what I like, because some people don’t have that. Some people WISH they had the ability to workout. So just remember that the next time you start having doubts about yourself.
So, going into week 4 of The CrossFit Open, we are headed towards the end.. so PUSH HARD!! We have 2 weeks to go! And if you didn’t sign up this year, I highly encourage you to sign up next year. Maybe you sat out this year because it seemed intimidating or because you didn’t think you could do it. Or maybe you didn’t want to because you felt like you couldn’t do RX? Well, there is a scaled version, and people at my box have been KILLING IT scaled. I’m talking absolutely crushing these workouts, and even getting PR’s too! There is something for everyone in The Open, so next time it rolls around give it a shot!
Good luck to ALL athletes around the world, and may the wods be ever in your favor.
